Thanks to The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, and the Hugh Kaul Foundation, a new gymnasium is coming back to life in Wylam After years of neglect and water damage the original floor was buckled, warped and inhibited proper use for basketball and other sports. Yesterday, the floor was lifted up and under it a beautiful slab remains that will be cleaned to new and will be freshly prepared for the games to resume. Seen here are some volunteers from a local church and Wylam area youth. Much remains to be done; however this phase 1 is wrapping up.
The 10,000 sq. ft. gymnasium is the center space of a 17,000 foot building in Wylam that provides after school care, a computer lab, job training and GED services and social service outreach in cooperation with Lawson State and area agencies. New Covenant was one of the first 5 statewide recipients of a Seedco grant for strategic planning. As first time recipients of funds from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the Hugh Kaul Foundation New Covenant has an opportunity to expand programs and use space in an optimum way once the floor is complete.
New Covenant is also affiliated with UAB's Wellness Program. The additional space will enable New Covenant to expand health services in a dramatic way.
